What is Renewing Your Canadian PR Card
Renewing Your Canadian PR Card: What You Need to Know
What Is a PR Card Renewal?
When your Permanent Resident (PR) Card is nearing expiration or has already expired, you can apply to renew it. This renewal process ensures you have a valid document to return to Canada, especially when traveling by plane, bus, train, or boat.
When Should You Apply?
- Apply when your PR card has less than nine months (270 days) left before expiration—or if it’s already expired.
- Avoid applying too early—if your card still has more than nine months left, your application may be returned unless you’re changing your name or gender.
Who Can Apply?
You are eligible to renew your PR card if you:
- Are a permanent resident of Canada, physically present in Canada
- Meet residency obligations (i.e., have lived in Canada for at least 730 days within the past five years)
- Are not under a removal order, not a Canadian citizen, and haven’t misused a PR card
Step-by-Step Renewal Process
- Start your application in the PR Portal
Log into the Permanent Residence Portal and begin your application using form IMM 5444. - Gather and upload necessary documents
Upload the Document Checklist (IMM 5644) and any required documents such as your current PR card, identity proof, photos, proof of residency, and others as needed. - Pay the renewal fees
Make your payment online, then upload the payment receipt to your application. - Review and submit your application
Confirm all fields are complete, signed, and that all required documents are uploaded before submitting. - Provide biometrics if required
If applicable, you’ll receive a Biometric Instruction Letter (BIL). Go to a designated collection point as soon as possible—processing will wait until you do. - Track your application status
Use the PR Portal to monitor updates, check if your card will be mailed, or if IRCC asks you to pick it up.
After You Submit: What to Expect
- If you move, update your address within three weeks or sooner to ensure delivery.
- Upon approval, check the card details carefully—if there’s an error you may request a reissue.
- If you don’t receive your card within 6 weeks past the normal processing timeframe:
- Submit a solemn declaration
- Verify your address
- IRCC may reissue at no cost
- If your card is lost, stolen, or never received (after 180 days), apply for a replacement and pay the appropriate fees.
