Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD)
Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD): Returning to Canada Without a PR Card
What Is a PRTD?
A Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) is a one-time travel document issued to Canadian permanent residents who are outside Canada and do not have a valid PR card. It allows them to re-enter Canada by airplane, train, bus, or boat.
Who Needs a PRTD?
You must apply for a PRTD if you:
- Have permanent resident status in Canada,
- Are outside Canada, and
- Do not have a valid PR card to return with.
This includes situations where your PR card has expired, been lost, stolen, or damaged while you’re abroad.
Step-by-Step Application Guide
- Apply Online (or on Paper if Necessary):
Begin your application through the Permanent Residence Portal—preferred for convenience—or submit a paper application if needed. - Use the Right Forms & Checklist:
- Complete form IMM 5444.
- Include the Document Checklist (IMM 5644) to make sure your application is complete.
- Gather Required Documents:
You’ll need proof of your identity, PR status, and that you meet residency obligations. Include your passport only as a copy—do not send originals. - Pay the Application Fee:
Attach the payment receipt. The fee is not refundable once IRCC begins processing. - Apply Urgently If Needed:
If your travel isn’t flexible (e.g., due to medical or urgent reasons), you can request expedited processing. - After Applying:
- IRCC validates your application.
- If approved, they’ll instruct you on where to submit your physical passport, so they can affix the PRTD. Then it will be returned to you.
- In some cases, IRCC may request an interview or additional documents.
Important Notes to Keep in Mind
- The PRTD is generally valid for a single entry only. It’s wise to apply for a new PR card immediately after returning to Canada.
- You cannot apply for a PR card from outside the country—you must be back in Canada to do that.
- The PRTD does not grant on-going travel rights like a PR card does—it’s solely a return permit.
